Here is the
official Marine Accident Report January 20, 1984
On Sunday, October 24, 1982, the charter fishing boat Joan LaRie
III was returning from a sport fishing trip when it was struck by
a big wave about 8.5 nautical miles east of manasquan inlet, New
Jersey, about 11:16am. The boat was swamped, and about 11:46
it sank. Of the 22 persons onboard, both crew members and 4 passengers
were drowned; 2 passengers are missing and presumed dead.
The Joan LaRie III was built in 1968 and it was a 47' Charter boat.
The Joan LaRie III sailed from Ken's Landing. The vessel was docked
between where the Norma-K III and Norma-K II are today. Charley
Housley was the Captain and Wally was the deckhand. They were well
known and are sadly missed by all who knew them.
The tug boat was sunk in October and is now part of the Axel
Carlson Reef. She is in about 75' of water. The Joan LaRie
Memorial Tug is located at position 40'03N 73'59W. I would

Joan LaRie III Memorial
The Joan LaRie III was built in 1968 and it was a 47' Charter
boat. The Joan LaRie III sailed from Ken's Landing, between where
the Norma- K III and Norma-K II are today. Charley Housley was
the Captain and Wally was the deckhand. On the fateful day in
1983 The Joan LaRie III was fishing around the Slew which is about
14 miles South East of Manasquan Inlet for bluefish. The boat
capsized on the way back to Manasquan Inlet in extremely rough
seas. There were many other boats out fishing that day and tried
to aid in the rescue. The Captain, Mate & 6 Passengers were
lost, 3 others were injured.
